The Queen Victoria building a great shopping destination
Now that your on board let us take you around our city and experience the shopping at the Queen Victoria Building built by George McRae and completed in 1898 replacing the old Sydney markets site.
The Queen Victoria Building, or QVB, is a grand Victorian building located in the heart of the Sydney central business district. The elaborate Romanesque Revival architecture presents a contrast to the modern buildings around it. Measuring 190 metres long by 30 wide, it fills an entire city block, bounded by George, Market York and Druitt Streets.
Around and About Bus Hire & Tours offers a great Sydney bus hire tours as well as Sydney shopping tours.
The building was remodeled in the 1930s and used for different purposes, including municipal offices. In 1984 it was completely refurbished as a shopping centre, with more than 200 shops. The renovations, by the Malaysian company Ipoh GardenBerhad, were highly imaginative and thoughtful. Most important, they retained the turn-of-the-century charm of the building.
The building has a series of domes and domelets with exquisite stained glass windows and extensive wood panelling throughout.
